RIDE ALONG PROGRAM

Take the opportunity to observe the La Crosse Police Department (LCPD) at work first-hand. The "Ride-Along" program will allow you to experience how law enforcement situations are handled and to give you better insight to evaluate police and citizen interaction.

Through active citizen participation, the LCPD's goal of better communications between the community and police officers can be achieved.

We hope that your experience will help you have a personal perspective on police work that you can share with your family, neighbors and friends.

The LCPD appreciates your interest in the "Ride-Along" Program and encourages your participation as a "Ride-Along" participant.

Download the LCPD Ride-Along Request Form or ask any member of the department for a copy. A copy may also be obtained by writing to the department at the above address. After filling the form out completely, the participant must bring or mail the notarized form to the Police Department. Once a background check is completed, the prospective ride-along participant will be notified of the availability of shifts when he/she may ride.

Please note that it may take several weeks for the request to be processed and permission received to ride-along. Please plan accordingly. The usual turn-around time will be seven (7) days from receipt of the written/notarized request.

Participant's Conduct:
Participants must remain with an officer unless specifically directed by the officer otherwise. Participants must not touch or attempt to operate equipment or use any communication equipment without explicit authorization from the officer.
Participants might observe occurrences or activities during the ride-along which may require them to submit a written statement and/or testify in court at a later time.

Dress Code:
Participants must be appropriately attired and groomed. Men may wear polo shirts or other collared shirts, corduroy pants or slacks, and appropriate shoes. Women may wear a conservative dress or skirt, or pants. No blue jeans or T-Shirts are allowed. Approval to ride along may be denied if the participant is not properly dressed or has been drinking. Firearms or other weapons are not permitted.

INFORMED CONSENT/WAIVER OF LIABILITY:
Each participant will be advised, in writing, that there is some degree of risk involved by reason of the nature of law enforcement activity. The participant assumes any and all risks to which he or she may be exposed during the ride-along. Ride-Along participants must read, acknowledge understanding of the waiver of liability, and sign the form prior to being allowed to participate in a ride-along program.

Ride-Along Participants must have in their possession a valid photo identification card issued by a governmental agency and must provide the ID to the police officer with whom they will be riding. Participants without an ID will not be allowed to particpate in the ride-along program.

Ride Along Schedule: Ride-along participants may be scheduled during weekdays or weekends, during the daylight or evening hours.

Minimum participant age is 18 unless in a law enforcement educational program. Participants are limited to one ride-along per month, depending on officer availability and approval by the Chief of Police this restriction may be waived. Typical ride along with an officer is two to four hours.
